Essiac Tea Formula Herbs. Medicinal Uses and History.

Click on the links below for a detailed history of each of the essiac tea herbs and how they are used alone and combined with other herbs in our essiac tea formula.

Blessed Thistle. Blessed thistle is used to treat digestive ailments fundamentally caused by insufficient secretion of stomach acid. The herb's bitter taste triggers a reflex reaction that releases gastric juices into the stomach, especially those needed to digest fats. Blessed thistle is used by people with loss of appetite, upset stomach and gas.

Burdock Root. Burdock root is used internally for skin diseases and inflammatory conditions due to chronic toxicity notably eczema, psoriasis, rheumatism, gout, boils and sores. Burdock root is an important herb in this essiac tea formula.

Kelp. Kelp is a sea vegetable that is a concentrated source of minerals, including: iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Kelp as a source of iodine assists in making the thyroid hormones, which are necessary for maintaining normal metabolism in all cells of the body. This increases energy levels and helps make it easier to maintain a healthy body weight.

Red clover. Red clover may help reduce the effects of PMS and menopause and reduce the pain associated with menstrual periods. Used internally for skin complaints especially eczema and psoriasis.

Sheep Sorrel. Sheep Sorrel is high in oxalic acid, sodium, potassium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, beta carotene, and vitamin C. It is used as a mild diuretic, mild antiseptic, and a mild laxative. Sheep sorrel is possibly the most important herb in this essiac tea formula.

Slippery elm bark. Slippery elm bark soothes inflamed mucous membranes of the bowels, stomach, and urinary tract. Good for diarrhea and ulcers and for treatment of colds, flu, and sore throat.

Turkey rhubarb root. Turkey rhubarb root is used as a simple and safe purgative, being regarded as one of the most valuable remedies we possess, effecting a brisk, healthy purge, without clogging the bowels and producing constipation.

Watercress. High in Vitamin C, watercress is used as a general tonic, and its bitter taste is thought to regulate the appetite and improve digestion. Watercress is a popular cough and bronchitis natural health remedy. It contains a remarkable substance called rhein, which appears to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines. It is believed that rhein is also effective against Candida albicans (yeast infection), fever and inflammation, and pain.
